Maximising Support After Stoma Surgery
Who is this suitable for?
Anyone who provides support, information or services to anyone affected by stoma surgery.
What are the outcomes?
Understanding of how and why stomas are formed, awareness of the obstacles faced by people with stomas (both perceived and actual) and an ability to convey important information relating to these areas in a positive manner.
How long will it take?
One day (10am-4.30pm)
What is involved?
Anatomy & physiology
- Basic understanding of the digestive and urinary systems and the 3 main types of output stoma - colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy
Lifestyle Issues
- Discussion of common areas of concern for people with stomas including:
- Clothing
- Diet
- Travel
- Relationships
- Emphasis on the benefits of positive attitudes to all lifestyle issues relating to stomas
Communication techniques
- Understand how to communicate information about stomas, with a particular emphasis on positivity in that communication
Where does it take place?
In the training room at Ostomy Lifestyle in Reading, Berkshire
